Greenlight Electrolysis Test Station
Greenlight Electrolysis Test Station Scribner single cell

Sustainable and economic hydrogen production is currently a crucial challenge, as hydrogen is set to become a major energy vector in the near future. Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis (PEMWE) is a very promising technology since it enables the direct production of pressurized dihydrogen and fast transient phenomena well-suited for coupling with intermittent energy conversion systems.

As schematized, in these devices, thanks to electricity, water is split at the anode into O2, protons and electrons; protons are transported through the electrolyte and electrons flow through an external circuit. At the cathode protons and electrons recombine to form H2.

The high potential of this technology drives very intensive research on the development of new materials: including solid polymer electrolyte membranes and new catalysts for both Hydrogen Evolution and Oxygen Evolutions Reactions for PEMWE.
The Electrolysis technical platform is fully equipped for the evaluation of new materials in an actual electrolysis device.
The Electrolysis technical platform is equipped for membrane-electrodes assemblies (MEA) preparation. This step requires the preparation of catalytic ink, deposition and membrane-electrode assembly preparation. MEAs are further evaluated in a 5cm2 single cell implemented on PEMWE test station. The fully automated test station allow for voltage, current, water and gases flowrates, pressure, temperature, etc. monitoring and control for performance and durability studies.
Post-ageing characterization can be performed using other equipment available in the laboratory to assess materials degradation mechanisms.
